We updated the ship models! I am so happy! Dirtside announcement TOMORROW.
about 5 years ago – Wed, Apr 03, 2019 at 01:31:32 AM

Hi friends. We're going to print with The Starships THIS MONTH! The rulebook is nearly complete and the molds are getting made. I'll send an update about The Starships when we have images from the manufacturer.

Updated Ship Models

For a long time I've wanted the ship models for Battlestations to actually be based on the same geometry we rendered for the Battlestations module art. For technical reasons, I assumed when we launched The Starships that we would not be able to achieve this goal. So originally I settled on having vague approximations of the actual, playable ship blueprints being used as the basis for the 3D models for the minis.

I am very excited to announce that, thanks to a huge amount of work by my producer Joey, and by our modeler Ayham, we were able to realize my dream.

Each of the starships will be about 1 inch, to fit inside a hex on the star map. So of course they aren't to scale with each other for that reason. But they are accurate as far as fulfilling my suggested ship builds for each alien species. (Complete rules for building ships are in the advanced rulebook.)

I can't imagine that any of you will would prefer the old box-shaped non-accurate ships we showed during the campaign. But if for some reason any of you are unhappy, message me.

The old ships are still available for 3D printing, and the new ships are available for 3D printing here.

Dirtside Teaser...

We're about a month or so away from launching Dirtside. We're doing a big update TOMORROW, and we'll be ramping up some social media campaigns as well. Please feel free to offer your support or ask questions as we get closer to the debut. Check out the teaser below!

Alien Worlds Await!... Announcing DIRTSIDE!
about 5 years ago – Sat, Mar 02, 2019 at 12:43:43 AM

The finishing touches are getting placed on the starships. The rulebook is being laid out by Dan, who also laid out the Advanced Rulebook for Second Edition. We'll update you when we get everything sent off for manufacture.

Today is an exciting day for us because we're beginning the "prelaunch" phase of the next project, Battlestations: Dirtside! Yes, it is the sequel to Battlestations. Yes, you can land on planets. Yes, there are awesome vehicles you can drive around in. And yes, it was designed from the ground up to be playable without an Enemy player - fully cooperative against the game. There's a full story-driven campaign, plus dozens of one-off missions.

Here's the cover art, designed by Steve Hamilton, who also drew the terrains, as well as all the module art for Second Edition!

DIRTSIDE

DIRTSIDE is a cooperative board game for 1-8 players that is also fully cross-compatible with Battlestations Second Edition. The miniatures and starter character cards from each game can be played in the other game. There’s a full story-driven campaign, plus dozens of one-off missions you can knock out on a long lunch break! There are scores of unique planets you can explore, including the homeworlds of every alien species.

You and your friends are a team of heroes in the far future, landing your starship on mysterious planets, with adventures such as raiding, rescuing, fighting, and escaping. In each mission, your team will have an objective to cooperatively accomplish, with threats like motor gangs, natural disasters, or planetary bombardment. You can combine your actions to do fun things like ram a jetcar into a building (to turn the building into a crater), or try to put out a fire before it reaches your ship.

Your character starts with a special ability, weapons, and an ability for your species. You gain experience over time, rank up, and can purchase equipment between missions, plus gain new abilities. If you own Battlestations, your characters are already fully compatible with Dirtside, and you can transition seamlessly between Battlestations (missions in space) and Dirtside (missions on planets). What will YOU discover, Dirtside?

When is it launching?

Jeff wants it to launch immediately. But it isn't ready yet. We need to clean up the rulebook and shoot a bunch of content and send review copies off. We're hoping to launch in early April.

Which aliens from Battlestations are you including? Are they compatible?

Let us know which aliens you want to see. We've already announced that vomegs will be in the game. There will be several of the beastmen species like the testudinoid and ursanoid. There's the bubble-popping blootian, plus some even stranger aliens we'll announce (likely as stretch goals), like pyreltian and chronosian. All aliens in Battlestations are playable in Dirtside. All aliens in Dirtside are playable in Battlestations. Your personal characters can hop back and forth between the games, gaining experience, abilities, and prestige.

Are the rules the same as Battlestations?

For the most part, yes. Ship Cannons work the same as Cannon Installations on the ground (turret guns), which work the same as the cannons on a Fighter, or the cannons on a Drone (yes, a drone!). Movement rules are a bit different because in Dirtside, the scale is different. (A Ship Module fits into a single 2 inch space in Dirtside.)

Dirtside can be played with one player as The Enemy, but every mission is actually designed from the ground up to be played fully-cooperatively - against the game itself. (It can also be played solo.)

Thursday Night Battlestations

Jeff has decided to keep hosting games every Thursday night at 7pm (usually) on Tabletop Simulator (via the Steam app). The streaming has not been working very good all the time, but the games are happening and all are invited. Join the Discord server to learn more.

During the Kickstarter Jeff will likely be hosting games of Dirtside as well.

Have a great weekend and stay tuned for more!

PLANETOID AND FIGHTER REVEALED!
about 5 years ago – Wed, Feb 27, 2019 at 01:15:47 AM

Hi guys,

Joey here.  Jeff is spending today packing and shipping the Super Miniatures packs. The boxed games and books are being shipped via a fulfillment company. Those orders have been resubmitted (after a technical issue apparently held up shipping last week) and should start arriving by next week at latest (for most of you).

Planetoid and Fighter!

Thanks to the stretch goal unlocks, we have two new minis for you, the Planetoid and the Fighter. The Fighter is based on the actual image rendered three years ago for the fighter tiles that are included in Second Edition!

Improved Starships Sculpts

Since last month we've been working hard to redo ALL SIX starships models from the ground up, incorporating aspects from their actual geometry (from the module art). We should have the models to show you soon.

Testing finished

We're done with the Starships-specific play tests, so as soon as the rulebook is laid out and the minis are made, we'll move forward with production.
